ASUS EEE PC Problems and Solutions

May 11th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Computers

A week ago I finally purchased a ASUS eee PC 1000H, with the following specs

CPU: Intel Atom 1.66GHz
RAM: 1GB
Hard Disk: 160GB (not solid state)
Video Card: Intel Express

The mini laptop works great and smoothly, it’s very small and can be taken any where unlike other laptops that are too big to be portable. It’s perfect if you have any intention to stay connected to the internet and even for reading eBooks. However the ASUS EEE PC has some special requirements to work perfectly. The problem of not having a CD Rom will make you more dependent on flash/ethernet/WLAN to install programs and exchange data so here are some problems I ran into and how I dealt with them.

Need to Install Windows on ASUS EEE PC

To solve this problem I searched the internet and found a great way to make my flash disk (or even external hard disk) bootable and install windows xp using USB. It was very easy you just need to get to boot menu by pressing ESC and selecting the USB, for detailed information about how to make the flash bootable read this post.
One of the sub problems that you might encounter after installing WinXP this way is that you cannot install Office 2007, however after some searching I found the solution here.

The Screen is too Small and hard to read

As I use the laptop mostly to read books and update my blog so working with small unreadable fonts is no longer an option, The best thing to do in this case is increase windows font size by going to Display  Properties->Appearance->Font Size and selecting a larger font.

The hard is small in case of flash storage version

If you like to archive your data and install many programs the  flash version of the laptop is not for you. Also most flash versions come with 512mb ram, so it won’t let you run multiplr programs in the same time.

Some advice to increase IPhone 3G Battery Life

May 7th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in IPhone, Mobile Phones

Apple battery is designed to provide long battery life, however sometimes in cases of heavy usage the battery exhausts fast. In fact you can get you 3G IPhone to work longer if you manage to:

•    Turn off 3G and only use it when you need it, yes 3G off does increase battery life.
•    Turn off Wi Fi, Auto Brightness (25% or 33% brightness is ok) , Bluetooth, Sound Effects, EQ, SSH, Edge and only use them when needed.
•    Once per month, use your battery till its life is finished, and then recharge it to the full level, this is good for the battery because it resets it to the best ability. In fact the more you recharge your device, without letting the battery die completely, the lower your ‘battery capacity’

Play World of Warcraft on IPhone

May 3rd, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in IPhone, Mobile Phones

Another bonus to IPhone users who love to play Warcraft, now a version of world of Warcraft works on IPhones using vollee client (a program that allow 3G phones to play CPU intensive PC applications over the network). A couple of weeks ago a youtube video showed World of Warcraft working fine on an iPhone and responded with “fully working app.” When questioned whether it was for real.

The idea of vollee is similar to VNC or Remote desktop with some extra functions to allow streaming of full PC games directly from your computer, i.e. the processing will be on a server (in this case your computer) while you use the client in IPhone to play the game. Vollee has a partnership with Blizzard, the makers of World of Warcraft and they have also been able to port Second Life to mobile phones.

With this new technology will it be possible for blizzard to port Diablo 3 too when it is released? I think yes, we just have to wait and see.
